Flute lessons
Learning to play a musical instrument is a fundamental skill that goes beyond the music making. It enhances and nurtures our ability for learning in general, broadens our scope and makes us more receptive and responsive to assimilating information and putting it into action. From my perspective as an Alexander Technique teacher I am interested in exploring and discovering connections, organizing thought and movement.
Clarifying right effort and concentration we allow the natural functioning of a well balanced whole/person/movement and breathing to take place. This is at the basis of learning to play an instrument and can be applied to many other activities.

Lesson format
For beginning students I recommend the 45 minute lesson and 60 minutes for advanced students. We take time to do warm up and basics in flute technique. This allows for building a good foundation on which we can enjoy all the different varieties of music. The latter part of the lesson is for learning and playing pieces, duets or improvisation if desired. I equally enjoy working with beginning as well as advanced students. I like to get them to play together and accompany them at the piano.

When to start
A child can start flute lessons on the recorder as early as 4 or 5 years of age depending on the child. Movement, dancing, singing, basic music skills, reading notes, rhythm etc. are all part of the lesson.
Starting the concert flute is determined by overall strength and lung capacity anywhere from 9 to 11 years of age.

In general I welcome all age groups and levels. If you have always wanted to play an instrument, I am also working with adults and those that wonder if it is ‘too late’ now. I am teaching the 55, 65, 75 year old that just wants to have a go at it. It is a wonderful process and never too late to discover new sides of yourself.
