All pieces you see here are
individually hand painted. Each piece starts out with a plain piece of
white silk. I use a paintbrush to apply the color. Every motif and
pattern is painted freehand, no stencils have been used.
There are different varieties of spun silk; chamreuse a heavier
silk with a velveteen feel to it; chiffon a very airy and see-through
lightweight silk; crepe de chine, a mix between the two.
After stretching the silk onto a work frame the paint gets
applied by paintbrush, the paints are water-based used only for painting
on silk. Paint will spread on silk. In order to create forms and shapes
different techniques are used. In the paintings you see here I mainly
use a ‘resist’ with which I can define forms. The ‘resist’ gets washed
out at the end.
The last step is to make the color permanent through heat which
makes the scarf washable. Some pieces are combined with another fabric,
such as wool, raw silk, or woven silk. In those cases the piece needs to
be dry cleaned.
